If you need top gaming performance, general office laptops are not the right option. Today, graphics have evolved considerably, mainly driven by gaming. But with so many laptops, how do you know which to choose?
I went out and tested a few computers and the Acer Aspire Triton was my favorite. The latest 700 series is what I purchased for myself. I can see the manufacturer’s considerable improvements made in time on this computer since I’ve owned multiple laptops from the brand over the years.
The 700 series comes with an i7 processor. But you might be found with an i5 processor from the 500 series. However, I recommend expanding the budget to get the best the series has to offer.

The ultra-thin 0.74” laptop has an impressive range of ports. You get 1 X USB 3.1 type C port, 3 X USB 3 ports, 1 X USB 2 port, 1 X HDMI 2 port, 1 x display port, and 1 X Ethernet port. Now, I use all of these ports either with the TV or with a monitor.
I use HDMI connectivity to see the latest movies and since it has such a good graphics card, it handles all types of high-quality videos. I even watch HD YouTube and Vimeo videos without interruption on my TV. Part of this responsiveness is also based on the impressive WiFi chips.
With plenty of support for USB drives, I can also use my long list of accessories when relying on the laptop for office work. For example, I have a couple of desk lamps that can only be powered via USB.
But the connectivity has been appreciated by many gamers who weren’t expecting as many ports with its thin profile. But if you’re a true gamer, you will use most if not all of them.
Mechanical Keyboard
I still remember the first day I saw a mechanical keyboard on a laptop. I’ve seen them before for desktop computers, but it was different on laptops.
The manufacturer added this keyboard which provides better feedback for both gaming and for office work. I could even say that it would be difficult to go back to a non-mechanical keyboard at the moment.
But not everybody loves it as much as me. If you’re wondering why this is the case, it’s because the keys don’t travel as much as on an external keyboard. But I think this is expected, given the thin case of the laptop.
There’s one scenario where you might think twice about this, however. If you live with a roommate, it might not be the best idea. The keyboard is louder than a standard alternative. It doesn’t work when someone is trying to sleep in the same room with it.
Video and Overclocking
The video card of this gaming laptop is impressive. While it’s still not at the same level as those used in desktop computers, it’s still very close. The graphics card performs better than AMD’s Vega 64, the best video card alternative.
As a result, you can play the latest games on medium to high settings without interruptions. You have a smooth gaming experience and there are a few other technologies in the graphics card to make it even better. For example, its reduced power consumption in-between games make it a top performer, worthy of its popular name.
High Refresh Rate
But the screen of the laptop is not bad either. The resolution is acceptable and the refresh rate is very good. At 120Hz, you start noticing the difference compared to a low refresh rate monitor. In gaming, this translates into a better experience which looks smoother.
But the higher refresh rate is also better for your eyes. You might be wondering about the role of such a high refresh rate outside gaming. If you’re the type of user who also works on the laptop, you will appreciate it even more.
I like to catch up on work at home to be ahead when taking part in important projects. In my case, a low monitor refresh rate comes with itchy eyes rather quickly. But the manufacturer added this impressive monitor to the laptop which doesn’t make me turn to my desktop computer which has now become irrelevant.
No Overheating
Overheating is a big issue in gaming laptops. 2 metal coolers can be found on this laptop. The large coolers do a very good job. Even after playing for hours, I haven’t seen overheating which is higher than the standard gaming laptop performance.
I also use temperature monitoring software. But it hasn’t alerted me of any issue. I believe it’s a laptop that can be relied upon for a few years, even if I tested it only for a few months.
Comparison with a Desktop Computer
At this price, many compare it to a desktop computer. I think there are a few good similarities, such as the video performance and the mechanical keyboard. But at the same time, there is sufficient variable.
The battery is rather short. You won’t be playing any serious games while commuting to work for too long. Its trackpad is also rather useless. Some may even say the speakers lack that audio depth which would eliminate headphones.
But from my perspective, it has its place in the gaming community. The laptop offers very good gaming performance with portability. It’s not as heavy as other gaming laptops and it looks impressive. Those who want to use it for hours every day also rely on a robust keyboard that takes light abuse.
Yes, it’s not a desktop computer, but it doesn’t try to look anything, unlike a laptop. Its design remains sleek, even with all the features it comes with. This is what the manufacturer did a bit better than others. It remains portable and elegant, which are not always attributes given to gaming laptops.

Final Verdict
You can purchase the 700 series at a price between $1,300 and $1,700. The 500 series is a bit less, but also in this range. The i7-9750H 900 series with its flip screen costs around $4,500 on the web. But for me, the 700 series remains the right option.
I’m not participating in any gaming competitions. I’m also not looking to get the flip screen option as it would only be interesting for a day or 2. I think I’ve found the right balance between price and performance.
If you a gaming laptop with solid connectivity, a good refresh rate, a solid video card, and a robust keyboard, it might be the right option for you. However, if you live with a roommate, you can choose one of the 500 series releases if you want to stay as quiet as possible when playing a top game for hours.
